It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Leona Florence Martel, who passed away at Health Sciences North on June 29, 2026, at the remarkable age of 97, just weeks shy of her 98th birthday. Leona was born on July 20, 1928, and lived a life rich in love, resilience, laughter, and devotion to her family. She had a quick wit, a wonderful sense of humour, and a gift for making everyone around her feel welcome. To those who knew her, Leona was one of a kind—a strong, spirited woman whose warmth and kindness left a lasting impression.
Leona was predeceased by the love of her life, her beloved husband, Ernest Martel, who passed away on August 15, 2015. She was also predeceased by her son, Trevor Martel (Joanne), and her daughter, Marie Pichette (Gary). She leaves behind her loving daughter, Joyce Bowing (Chris), her son, Andre Martel (Carla), sister Rita Irwin (Stan), brother Lionel (Gerrie) along with her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends, all of whom will carry her memory in their hearts. Leona’s greatest joy was her family and close friends.
She treasured every visit, every conversation, and every opportunity to share a laugh. Her wisdom, strength, and caring spirit were gifts she gave freely, and her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Dhatt and the NEOMO medical stall along with the compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff at Health Sciences North for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Leona during her final days.
Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Leona has been reunited with Ernest. She leaves behind a lifetime of treasured memories, unconditional love, and countless reasons to smile whenever her name is spoken.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 24 2026, from 12:00- 3:00pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 564, 2200 Long Lake Road, Sudbury P3E-5H1. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate Leona’s life.
She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in our hearts. “Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near.”
Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Alternative Funeral Services.
