Joseph Grdisa Obituary

Joseph Grdisa March 18, 1937 – August 5, 2025 With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our father and grandfather Joseph Grdisa of Elliot Lake, who died peacefully surrounded by love. Born on March 18, 1937, in Novaki, Croatia, to Slavica and Jakob Grdisa, Joe came to Canada in 1956 in search of a better life. No job was ever beneath him—his strong work ethic and perseverance became hallmarks of his character. It was in Toronto where he met the love of his life, Irene (née Basadur). They married in 1960 and built a life together, raising their two children, Marylynne (Stuart) Chamney and Joseph (Valerie) Grdisa. Joe was predeceased by Irene, his beloved wife of over 50 years. We take deep comfort knowing they are now reunited. Joe was a proud grandfather to Andrea Weber (Jonathan), Jakob Grdisa, and Madison Grdisa. His career as a TTC bus operator spanned many years until his retirement in 1996. A man who never met a stranger, his easy connection with others left a lasting impression on everyone. Joe will be remembered for his no-nonsense approach to life, his warmth and humor, his love of animals, and his appreciation for a good rye whiskey. Our family extends deep gratitude to the staff at Hillside for their compassionate care during Joe’s final chapter, and to the team at St. Joseph’s Hospital for the dignity and love they showed in his final days.
